Learning to walk

Signing up for Walk the Walk in March felt like the right thing to do.  The distance of 140km seemed manageable over a whole month, and I love the work Orange Sky does.  But lately, I’ve been flagging, and it’s felt tougher getting out every day and clocking up the Ks.

My family and the folks who have sponsored me have kept me going.  But I could not have imagined starting this without Helen, my exercise physiologist.  After a handful of sessions to unravel the source of headaches and a sore knee, Helen kindly asked me to stop my 4x-a-week boot camp and instead go for a walk.  Every day.  For an hour.

I was not impressed.  I love my 5.30 am classes with The Legends.  It’s more than an exercise class; it’s a community that gives me a sense of belonging.  As a relative newcomer to life back in Australia, they gave me connection and kept me accountable, which Helen knew.  But, crushed at Helen’s ask and unimpressed with her alternative, I trusted her wisdom and expertise.

I started walking for an hour a day and discovered that where we live happened to be some of Brisbane’s steepest streets.  I got fitter, and didn’t think twice about signing up for Orange Sky's challenge.  ‘Too easy’ as they say around here.

It’s now the home stretch, with eight days and 34km to reach my target. My trainers have no tread, and I fancy hiding away and hoping people will forget this mad endeavour.  When it’s raining, I’ve hesitated until I remember your support and how those experiencing homelessness don’t get to choose the weather either.

Orange Sky does more than provide clean clothes and a warm shower; their people foster genuine human connection.  As a Connector still working out this new life back in Australia, my thanks go to Chief Legend Paul, Rachel (my fellow boot camper I met 15 years ago in Bahrain), Helen and also Di, who connected us.  Most of all, thanks to you for your contribution to my page.  You’ve kept me accountable and walking the streets for those currently living on them.

I'm walking for the 122,000 Australians experiencing homelessness

Right now, there are 122,000 Australians experiencing homelessness. That's 1 in 210 people.

This March, I will be taking part in Walk the Walk and going the distance for the 122,000 people doing it tough in our community.

I'm walking to raise funds for Orange Sky's vital work providing connection through clean laundry, warm showers, and genuine conversation.

Please support my walk to positively connect communities and support people who need it the most.

Together, we can show Aussies experiencing homelessness they're not alone.
